Playing octaves has been popular with guitarists from Hendrix and Wes Montgomery to Steve Vai.
The benefit is thicker sound than single notes without more harmonic information. Due to this, you use a clean or distorted tone played with your thumb like Montgomery, or strummed hard like Jonny Greenwood or Dave Grohl. Try these and get some octaves into your playing!
Gear
We played a Fender Tele and Strat, both with noiseless pickups, through a Line 6 POD.
