Monday 4 - Wednesday 6 August: Double Bill: Louis Hayes Cannonball Legacy Band/Antonio Hart Quartet Ticket prixes: £36/£26/£20
Many tribute bands and acts are formed by musicians who follow the same discipline as the artist they are revering. So it´s a refreshing change to see and hear a perspective on the stunning talent of saxophonist Julian ‘Cannonball´ Adderley from Detroit born drummer Louis Hayes. Of course, Hayes is perfectly placed to present this tribute, playing as he did with Adderley´s Quintet during the highly productive period of 1959 - 1960. His other work includes time spent with such names as Yusef Lateef, Freddie Hubbard, Horace Silver, Booker Little, McCoy Tyner, Kenny Burrell, John Coltrane and many others. His swinging style takes its cue from early influences such as Philly Joe Jones and he is rated as one of the great session players of his time. Hayes has assembled a strong cast of players to join him in this endeavour, with Julius Tolentino taking the late master´s role on alto, the exceptional Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Rick Germanson on piano and Santi Debriano on bass.
For this special double billing, Ronnie Scott´s also welcomes alto star Antonio Hart with his excellent quartet. The Berklee educated sax player has toured internationally with his fellow Berklee classmate Roy Hargrove and performed with Nancy Wilson, Nat Adderley, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Lionel Slide Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie´s Alumni All-Stars. His esteemed group is completed by Cincinnati´s Blue Wisp Jazz Club house pianist of 16 years Phil DeGreg, WDR Big Band bass player John Goldsby and Steve Davis, former sideman with the likes of Bill Evans, David Liebman and John Pattitucci, on drums.
Thursday 7 - Friday 8: Louis Hayes Cannonball Legacy Band
Ticket prixes: £36/£26/£20
Following the double billing of the previous nights alongside the Antonio Hart Quartet, Louis Hayes´ group takes to the stage on their own. The highly regarded drummer´s interpretations of Julian ‘Cannonball´ Adderley´s music are wonderfully realised and, informed as they are by his time spent playing in the great altoist´s band, respectfully authentic. Cannonball´s legacy is in good hands.
