As a professional studio gear reviewer I have decades of experience with studio headphones - here are the five pairs worth buying this Prime Day

Prime Day music deals are finally here with a deluge of savings on studio gear and some incredibly low prices. Whilst many lesser-known headphone brands are going cheap on Amazon at the moment, I’d steer well clear of these for anything other than casual listening duties. Thankfully, there are some great deals on established studio brands like Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, AKG, and more, perfect for upping your mixing game for less.

I’ve been reviewing studio gear for a couple of years now, and have spent the last 20 years doing home recordings for a multitude of bands and solo artists. Studio headphones have been an ever more important part of my mixing process for a couple of reasons, firstly, they take your mixing room out of the equation, and thus any inconsistencies or issues you might have in your monitoring there.

Secondly, most people are going to listen to your music on headphones, so understanding how your mix translates on a set of cans is crucial for anyone hoping to provide an intoxicating listening experience. Most people will be listening on their phones whilst commuting or at work with earbuds or over-ears, so you need to provide a great mix for your main core of listeners.

Prime Day is a great chance for anyone to pick out their favourite bit of gear cheap, but it hasn’t always been this way. It’s only in the last few years I’ve started to see better deals for musicians, and it’s getting better value every year.

Part of my job is to cross-reference any deals that look too good to be true with other retailers to make sure it’s genuinely good value for money, so in picking these 5 pairs of studio headphones I’ve also done a price check to show how much they’re going for elsewhere. I’ve also sorted them in price order to make things even easier for you. Let's get started...

AKG K240: Was $160, now $68

AKG K240: Was $160, now $68
The RRP on Amazon for these headphones is a little misleading, as this is the price they were when they came out which was a long time ago now. That said, they’re still cheaper on Amazon than anywhere else currently, and I used a pair of these for years when tracking instruments. They’re still going today despite looking a little worse for wear and if you need a cheap pair of headphones with a pretty neutral balance, these are a great shout.

Mackie MC-450: Was 199.99, now $114

Mackie MC-450: Was 199.99, now $114
A nicely balanced pair of open-back studio headphones, the Mackie MC-450s have got a significant $85.99 discount making them great value for money. They’re relatively hefty and well-built enough to take on the road, and the three different cable choices are a really nice touch. The sound of these headphones is very neutral in the lows and mids, although they are voiced fairly bright. This means you may want to use headphone software to neutralise them even further but with the current discount, they’re still excellent value in our book.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x: Was $149, now $121.48

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x: Was $149, now $121.48
Amongst the most popular studio headphones in the world, the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x is a great choice for helping elevate your mixes. They’re nice and lightweight for long mixing sessions, with decent isolation if you need it. There’s a lovely balance of sound with a weighty low end and a bright top, which gives you a very detailed sound for mixing duties. A $27.52 discount makes them even better value for money than they already are at full price, an excellent choice if you need a do-it-all pair of headphones on a lesser budget.

Rode NTH-100: Was $149, now $139

Rode NTH-100: Was $149, now $139
One of our picks of the best headphones for mixing we’ve ever tested here at MusicRadar, the Rode NTH-100 has a small discount of $10 on Amazon at the moment. For us, these headphones are worth every penny so whilst it might not seem like the biggest saving on the face of it, you’re getting yourself a properly good pair of studio headphones at a discount - a win in our book. Their innovative design makes them extremely comfortable for long listening sessions, and the overall character of their sound is neutral and smooth.

Sennheiser HD 650: Was $499.95, now $349.95

Sennheiser HD 650: Was $499.95, now $349.95
If you want a premium pair of studio headphones, I’d go for the Sennheiser HD 650s. Even with a massive $150 discount, they’re not cheap, but the moment you strap these on you’ll know they’re worth every penny. The sense of space in the sound field is absolutely stunning, with superb detail that lets you pick out every nuance of a mix. The low-end detail is incredible, going down to a ridiculous 10Hz and although most humans can’t hear this low, it definitely helps these cans deliver an aggressive sound that’s perfect for balancing your kick and bass guitar.
