The Secret Machines marked the release of their self-titled third LP yesterday (14 October) by launching a GarageBand remix contest. The space-rockers are giving away the stem files for upcoming single Atomic Heels, with the winning remix appearing as a b-side to the digital EP.

Head to Atomicremix.com to download the raw files and start remixing. You'll need GarageBand 3 or greater running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 or higher, and the project is also compatible with Logic Pro 7.

Contestants need to create a profile on The Secret Machines' social network to post (up to five) submissions in MP3 format. Send one to thesecretmachines@me.com too, just in case.

The act of giving away stem files to fans is becoming somewhat of a standard promotional tool for bands. The last month alone saw Radiohead and Kanye West offering the same. For aspiring, or even professional computer-musicians, however, these are still opportunities not to be missed, and bagging an 'official' remix should be seen as a real honour.
