Newer doesn’t always mean better and this last-minute Cyber Monday deal on my favorite headphone amp for guitar proves it

A Fender Mustang Micro practice amp

I’ve had an original Fender Mustang Micro at home for a long time now and although I was given its replacement to review, I still rate it very highly. Its portability is second to none and I’ve used it all over my house from the sofa, to my bedroom, and even in the garden. It’s one of the best headphone amps for guitar and already a cheap bit of gear but a nice $15 reduction at Musician’s Friend makes it even better value for money.

With 12 amp and effects models, it can cover a lot of ground from pristine Fender cleans right through to modern metal tones. With the end of the Cyber Monday music deals fast approaching, it might not be around for much longer.

Fender Mustang Micro: was $99.99 now $84.99 at Musician's Friend

One of the original, and in our opinion still one of the best headphone amps for guitar, the Fender Mustang Micro has a nice $15 discount at Musician’s Friend in their Cyber Monday sale. Packed full of amp models and effects it fits a surprisingly large amount of functionality into a teeny-tiny chassis, making it a brilliant, low-cost choice for practicing your instrument at home on the go.

I’ve had a Mustang Micro knocking around for a long time now and it’s a brilliant option for practicing. Its teeny tiny size means it can be stored in a drawer or somewhere else inconspicuous and that also makes it ultra-portable. I’ve taken it on work trips, holidays, and family visits before to get some practice in during my downtime, easily chucking it into a backpack with a minimum of fuss.

There are some super tone options on the Mustang Micro and an onboard EQ lets you sculpt things further. With 12 different amp tones, you’ll easily find your favorites but I’m sure most people will be taken by the Fender Twin emulation. I loved the EVH 5150 sound for getting heavy with my extended-range guitars, and the stereo delay which sounds phenomenal through a pair of headphones.

Even though it’s a bit older it comes with USB-C so you can easily charge anywhere you are. Best of all you can easily hook it up to a smartphone and use it as an external microphone, which makes creating guitar videos super easy provided you have a USB-C cable that’s long enough. I put it head to head with its replacement the Fender Mustang Micro Plus and was honestly surprised at how well it holds up, especially if you’re on a budget and want something that’s great value for money.
