Hendrix and U2 guitars sell at charity auction

Jimi Hendrix

's red 1966 Fender Mustang has fetched $400,000 in a charity auction, according to Reuters.

The guitar sold on Saturday (April 21) at New York's Hard Rock Cafe and was part of a number of music-related items being auctioned by Music Rising, the charity formed by

U2

's The Edge to benefit musicians who lost their homes and instruments in 2005's Hurricane Katrina.

Other items in the auction included a pair of

John Lennon

's round, blue-tinted sunglasses (fetching $30,000), former US president Bill Clinton's saxophone ($54,000) and The Edge's Gibson Les Paul - one of his favourite guitars and used on numerous recordings - which went for $240,000.

But Edge's longtime guitar tech, Dallas Schoo, said he was sorry to see his boss' Les Paul go as it was a staple guitar for concerts: "whenever Bono yells that he wants to go into free form," Schoo said, "that has always been my go-to guitar" [to hand to The Edge].
